How to DIY Clean Your HVAC Unit To Prevent Clogs and Mold

Cleaning your HVAC unit with bleach can be effective in removing mold and mildew buildup from the system. It will also prevent HVAC blockages that will cause water damage in your basement.

I had a huge leak in my basement one year and it saturated the carpet, it caused a lot of water damage. After calling our HVAC specialist, he told me that it was because my HVAC tubes were clogged with debris and he recommended that I clean them once a year to prevent build up and mold. Most homeowners have no idea that this is something they need to upkeep with.

Here is how to clean the HVAC tube to prevent any future blockages and water leaks from your HVAC unit.

  • Pour a small cup of Bleach (4oz is fine) inside the external tube. (See video on how to locate the tube)
  • Wait about 5 minutes.
  • Pour hot, not scalding, water inside the tube and wash out the bleach. If you have a scrub brush use that to help break up and scrub away the mildew.

That is it! That is all you have to do once a year to prevent a huge HVAC leak and damage in your basement!
